The Bishop’s Palace & Gardens

The Garden

The Bishop’s Palace, Wells is an 800 year old site set in 14 acres of beautiful RHS partner gardens, including a 14th century moat, a community garden and public allotments.  It is owned by the Church Commissioners and operated by The Palace Trust, a registered charity which manages the site as a heritage visitor attraction.

As stewards of this beautiful and historic place, our primary purpose is to conserve The Bishop’s Palace and its story as a place of enjoyment and reflection for the benefit of all.  We aim to inspire and touch the lives of many by offering joy, healing, hope and wellbeing.

The Silent Space

The Quiet Garden is nestled in the north west corner of the gardens.  In contrast to the rest of the Palace gardens, this is a modern and contemporary garden.  It was opened in 2013, replacing a former derelict space and kitchen gardens and was the inspiration of Bishop Peter Price and his wife, Dee.

Within this peaceful space you can rest a moment on the sweeping 40ft stone seat and take in the contemporary and restful planting of grasses and perennials, the peaceful glade of 85 silver birches underplanted with wildflowers and the striking sculptural poustinia, rising up 9 feet high. This is a space for quietness and contemplation.

For opening times please check the Garden's website.
