Nant-y-bedd

Black Mountains, Wales

The Garden

Nant-y-bedd is an RHS Partner Garden comprising 10 acres of wild garden, meadow and forest. The garden, together with its pond, stream and river, is hidden away in the remote Grwyne Fawr valley, deep in the heart of the Black Mountains of Wales.

Organic and sustainable gardening practices over 40 years have created a special place which blends seamlessly into the landscape of the Brecon Beacons National Park.  Wildflowers, bees, birds, and butterflies abound.  Ravens call overhead, dippers fly along the river, and dragonflies flit around the natural swimming pond.

The Silent Space

Our new Silent Space includes a wonderful construction of logs from the surrounding forest, beautifully made by Mick Petts, to enable sitting and reclining.  Named the Chaise Log, one can sit facing the Grwyne Fawr river (a Special Area of Conservation) and a small waterfall, or lie back and watch the clouds scudding through a circular gap in the 100ft tall Norway Spruce trees.  Including a line by Gordon Hempton, Silence is not the absence of something, but the presence of everything, our new Silent Space is already attracting plenty of approval.

Take the path from the Potager, go through the inviting gate flanked by Cedric, who welcomes you to the forest, Coed y Bedd.  The gentle path leads you through majestic trees to find this quiet and secluded spot amongst the natural green space.  Here, you can sit among the magnificent trees and listen to the birds and the sound of the nearby river.  Breathe in the scents of the forest and soak up the peace and tranquility.  A perfect spot to recharge the batteries.
